“I just don’t understand what happened. I felt better. I was starting to believe in the power of therapy and positive thinking, and then bam—I had the worst week I’ve had in a year probably.”

What Juliana was referring to, the following Friday in her second therapy session, was the fact that she woke up Sunday morning after what had been a really lovely Saturday, and felt like garbage. She was sad, her heart hurt, and she only dragged herself out of bed to let the dog out and grab a glass of water, then she went straight back to sleep for hours. This sleepy, somberness weighed her down for the rest of her work week as well, and she found herself falling short of her quota three days in a row. Her boss was now threatening to fire her, and even though that would leave her totally destitute, she didn’t even have enough energy left over to care.

“I thought you had cured me, doc,” she said. “But turns out, I’m still just as broken as I was before we started talking. So what gives?”

“First of all, you’re not broken,” Emily assured her. “This just isn’t the kind of thing that’s going to be taken care of in a single session. I wish I could just say the magic words and that all your grief would disappear overnight, but I’m not a magician.”

“Could at least try a few spells? Just in case?”

Emily laughed. “No, but I can tell you this—I think the fact that you had a good day is something you ought to celebrate. Those days will continue to come, I know they will, and I do believe that they will come more often… If you continue to work through some of these emotions you’ve been pushing down all this time.”

“That’s a little convenient, don’t you think?” she said. “You’re telling me that the only way I’m going to continue having good days is if I keep paying to see you?”

Emily shook her head, smiling. “You don’t have to keep coming back to me. You can see any therapist you want. I just think you should stick with therapy in general.”

Juliana narrowed her eyes, but she wasn’t actually mad. Oddly enough, sitting down to talk to Emily that afternoon marked the first time in five days that she had actually felt excited about something. That she’d actually cracked a smile. “Likely story,” she said.

“Look.” Emily folded her hands on her desk and leaned a little closer to her computer screen. “All I’m saying is that something good happened the day after you decided to open up and talk about your feelings with someone. It could be a coincidence, for sure, but it might also not be.”

“But I don’t know how I feel about riding a rollercoaster like this. I was feeling so great on Saturday, and then I hit such a low-low the next day… It was very jarring.”

“Well, you have to give yourself time. Based on what you’ve told
